The video game market is expanding and Canadians are participating
VANCOUVER, BC, December 15, 2009- NPD reports that Nintendo has now sold over two million units of Nintendo’s Wii™ system in Canada. Wii is the first system of the current generation to reach this sales volume and now joins the Nintendo DS™ portable handheld system above the two million units sold mark (both stats are reflective of Canadian NPD data*).
The Wii system celebrated its third birthday on November 19, 2009, and the upcoming holiday season will be the fourth consecutive season that Wii will be one of the hottest must have items for holiday shoppers.
“Since day one, Canadian consumers have shown an incredible affinity for Wii. With nearly one in three homes in Canada owning a Wii system, more and more families and players of all ages are loving the experience that Wii has to offer,” said Ron Bertram, Nintendo of Canada’s vice-president and general manager. “With unique gameplay, a new MSRP of $219.95 and an unprecedented lineup of great games, Wii is poised to reach even more Canadians this holiday.”
“Nintendo’s Wii is the fastest console NPD has ever tracked in Canada to hit the two million unit mark,” said NPD Canada’s Matthew Tattle, “which has provided Nintendo and 3rd party publishers a huge user base to target.”
The Wii system launched in Canada on November 19, 2006 with Wii motion controls. These simple and intuitive controls brought many new consumers of all ages into the gaming category. Nintendo has also focused on offering software for the widest range of ages, ability and tastes, making Wii the best selling console on the market. This holiday season Nintendo is offering exclusive titles for some of its blockbuster franchises which are only available for Wii, such as Wii Fit™ Plus, New Super Mario Bros™. Wii, and Wii Sports Resort™.
